A valid North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District burn permit is required for all open outdoor burning for the purpose of disposal of dried natural vegetation grown onsite. District permits are not required for small recreational or ceremonial campfires. A standard burn permit authorizes an individual to burn a maximum of one 4′-diameter pile of approved materials at a time.
Burn hours are from 6:00 am to 12:00 noon on permissive burn days only; call 866-287-6329 (866-BURNDAY) to determine burn day status. Please contact CalFire Humboldt-Del Norte Unit dispatch at 707-725-4413 prior to igniting your burn pile to notify them that smoke originating from your location will be the product of a permitted burn. Burn locations that fall within State Responsibility Area will also require an additional burn permit issued by CalFire. Approved combustibles consist of dry brush and vegetation. The following items are prohibited from being burned: paper, cardboard, rubber tires, asphalt, shingles, cloth or upholstery, colored/glossy paper, plastic, tar paper, linoleum, diapers, carpeting and any other materials not listed as approved combustibles. Burn barrels are outlawed as of January 1, 2004.
